F1 Mexico GP: Verstappen Favored for Victory and Championship
Max Verstappen emerges as favorite for Mexico GP after dominant US performance. Analysis of track conditions, Red Bull advantages, and championship battle.
F1 Title Race: Verstappen Emerges as Clear Favorite for Mexico and Beyond
The Formula 1 circus has rolled into Mexico from Texas on a wave of Verstappen mania, following the Dutchman’s complete domination at the United States Grand Prix. With a sprint pole, sprint victory, main qualifying pole, and race win, Max devoured half the gap to the leading McLarens in one devastating weekend.
Championship Picture Transformed
Lando Norris now sits just 14 points ahead in the championship, while Oscar Piastri’s advantage has shrunk to only 40 points. This represents a remarkable turnaround from summer, when the reigning champion himself would have called anyone predicting such a comeback “an idiot.”
Verstappen’s championship odds have skyrocketed, placing him firmly among the legitimate favorites for both the Mexican Grand Prix and the season finale. But is this renewed status justified?
Verstappen Expected to Secure Back-to-Back Wins
While recent races saw diminished expectations, Verstappen has reclaimed his favorite status for the upcoming race. The probability shift has been dramatic: from 20% or less in Italy and Azerbaijan, to 28% in Singapore, 33% in the United States, and now 40% for Mexico.
The betting markets tell a compelling story. Before the US Grand Prix, the top three contenders were tightly grouped: Verstappen at 3.00, Lando Norris at 3.10, and Oscar Piastri at 3.40. While the same trio remains favored, confidence in Verstappen has significantly increased.
Ferrari’s Fading Challenge
Charles Leclerc continues his downward trajectory in the odds. The Ferrari driver dropped from 6.70 before Singapore to 15.00 before the US GP, and now sits at 17.00 for Mexico. George Russell’s odds have stabilized at more familiar levels compared to his previous 10.00.
The main intrigue undoubtedly centers on the three-way battle between Verstappen, Norris, and Piastri. While Singapore saw an even tighter grouping with all three between 3.10-3.40, the current spread remains compelling despite slightly larger gaps.
Track Characteristics Favor Red Bull
Mexico’s Unique Challenges
Though only one week separates the Texas and Mexico events, the relatively short travel distance and different track requirements mean parts shortages won’t play the same decisive role. Due to the circuit configuration and high-altitude location, teams bring completely different wings and bodywork packages.
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez presents a unique challenge: half technical and slow with high downforce demands, the other half extremely fast with an exceptionally long straight.
High-Altitude Aerodynamic Puzzle
This configuration typically requires reducing downforce, but the 2,286-meter elevation complicates matters dramatically. At this altitude, aerodynamic efficiency drops by approximately 25%, making Mexico one of the most challenging setup puzzles on the calendar.
Teams face critical decisions: run more wing and suffer on the massive 1.2km straight, or reduce downforce and risk sliding through corners, overheating tires, and struggling in race conditions? The questions multiply when considering strategy.
Slippery Surface and Evolving Track
The slippery asphalt adds another layer of complexity. With minimal other racing activity throughout the year, the track offers poor initial grip. Every car suffers from reduced mechanical grip, requiring careful suspension setup adjustments. However, lap times should improve significantly as rubber gets laid down throughout the weekend.
Pirelli’s Experimental Tire Compounds
Adding to the challenge is Pirelli’s continued tire experimentation. The hardest compound remains the durable C2, while medium and soft tires stay as C4 and C5 respectively from the five-compound range.
While the US Grand Prix featured mostly one-stop strategies with minimal hard compound usage and easier tire warm-up, Mexico presents different challenges. The combination of high loads and rear tire overheating could prove decisive in the race outcome.
As teams unpack in Mexico City, all eyes remain on whether Verstappen can convert his favorite status into another dominant performance, or if the unique challenges of the high-altitude circuit will produce another twist in this compelling championship battle.
